Open Call for Backlight Photo Festival 2017

Dear Friends of the Backlight Photo Festival,

We are happy and exited to inform you that the call for the Backlight Photo Festival 2017 is NOW open.

We are looking for photography and lens-based projects dealing with Backlight ´17 festivals theme


Deadline for the submissions is June 5th 2016 12.00 pm CET.

In addition to the exhibitions organized in Finland during the festival, Backlight will also organize a touring exhibition / exhibition series in Europe during the year 2017. Independence Through the Lenses (working title), is part of the programme for the centenary of Finland´s independence in 2017 ( . This call ( is for Finnish artists and artists based in Finland. Applicants can apply with the same online form as for the open call for the Backlight Photo Festival 2017.


We are also very pleased to inform Finnish artists about the special Majaoja Prize which will be given out by the Majaoja Foundation ( . The Majaoja Foundation gives out the special Majaoja Prize during the Backlight Photo Festival 2017, under the events theme Independence. Three Finnish photographers from amongst the applicants of the open call for Backlight ´17 will be awarded with the total sum of 18.000 euros (10.000€/5.000€/3.000€/each). The open call jury for the Backlight Photo Festival 2017 will select the photographers for the awards by the end of 2016. The announcement of the winners will be made by the Majaoja Foundation during the Backlight Photo Festival 2017.


The Backlight Photo Festival has strong roots in documentary photography, yet today focusing on current social themes through various concepts and artistic approaches extending culturally engaged perspectives on reality. The Backlight Photo Festival promotes intercultural dialogue by revealing the hidden, the veiled, the lost and forgotten. The Photographic Centre Nykyaika has organized international photography festival since 1987 in Tampere, Finland. Since then the festival has presented more than 350 artists from over 40 countries. Each Backlight forms a unique entity with current social theme, renewed structure and challenging content with exhibitions accompanied by a wide-ranging Symposium program.
